Dear Sir
Subject: Possible Rise in Deforestation after Ban on Plastic Bags
I am writing this letter to express my concern at the alarming rise in deforestation due to the
total ban on plastic bags.
While I appreciate the initiative to ban plastic, I feel a total ban might have grave
consequences – more paper bags might mean excessive deforestation. This might upset the
fragile ecological balance and have an adverse effect on the environment. A reduction in green
cover will lead to soil erosion, water cycle disruption and biodiversity losses.
I feel the ban on plastic bags should be imposed in a phased manner so that it gives us time to
manufacture alternatives like biodegradable plastic bags and cotton bags. Shoppers should be
sensitised about the impending threat and encouraged to bring their own reusable carry bags.
Every citizen has to make an active effort to save the planet. Only then can we gift the next
generation a happy future.
Yours faithfully
Sundar Rajan
