Dear Sir
Subject: Mental Health Problems in Students
I would like to draw the attention of the public through the columns of this newspaper to the
burning issue of mental health disorders.
There has been an increase in various forms of mental illness in young adults and students.
Sometimes for long periods of time it goes unrecognised. The cause of this is rooted in ignorance
and nonchalance.
Mental illnesses can manifest in a number of ways such as anxiety, depression, compulsive
behaviour, suicidal tendencies, etc. A recent survey shows a high rate of suicide reports from
various educational organisations.
There are a number of possible causes for this. They include inability to cope with academic
stress, peer pressure, parental expectations, or sometimes a neurochemical disorder. Children
and adolescents are very susceptible to these problems. Parents, teachers, as well as the students
themselves must be constantly vigilant and try to not ignore any warning signs. We need to
increase access to counsellors, as well as reform the methods of teaching.
Children are called the future of the nation. It is therefore our duty to ensure the mental and
emotional well being of our future.
Yours faithfully
Kanishk Kuroor
