In spite of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act being in place, we still witness the
disturbing sight of children working in shops and factories. Write a letter to the editor of an English
newspaper in 100–150 words expressing your concern.

            In your letter you should:
              • introduce the matter of concern
              • mention factors leading to child labour
              • mention risks involved and rehabilitation measures

              Dear Sir

Subject: Rampant Child Labour in Our Country

In spite of various legislations in place, and a number of non-profit organisations working to end its
scourge, child labour continues to remain one of the most daunting challenges. I would like to draw the
attention of the public as well as the government to this disgraceful practice through the columns of your
              newspaper.

There are millions of children in India who are working in various small-scale industries, hotels, stores,
etc. They are denied education and also basic necessities as children, and are exposed to various hazards
socially and physically. Children are easily taken advantage of and exploited as cheap labour for various
industries. There is hardly any scope for upward mobility.

There is a high risk of them falling into the wrong company and indulging in drugs or other forms of
              abuse.
In the heart of New Delhi, not far from the seat of our national government, one can see scores of
establishments that openly employ children. It is puzzling how a democratic nation that promises equal
rights and opportunities to all its citizens can continue to allow an inhuman system like this to exist right
              in its capital.

It is time our government, social organisations, and most importantly, the conscientious citizens of the
country woke up and rooted out child labour.

              Yours faithfully

              Arpita Patwardhan
